Kátia d'Almeida d'Oliveira Rosado Guerreiro Ochoa (known as: Kátia Guerreiro , born February 23, 1976 in Vanderbijlpark , South Africa ) is a Portuguese fado singer and doctor.

Career

Your life is divided into two passions, music and medicine . In the meantime she is one of the internationally better known Fado singers; their fado is characterized by the richness of its texts, which come from contemporary Portuguese writers, above all from António Lobo Antunes .

Your CV turned out to be geographically eventful. She was born in South Africa, raised in the Azores where she joined a folklore group and then went to Lisbon to enroll in medicine . She initially worked at the Évora District Hospital , but later returned to the capital to specialize in ophthalmology . During this training, she discovered her vein for Fado, first in private with colleagues, later in a more serious form in concerts, to which she performed together with the guitarists Paulo Parreira and João Veiga .

Together with them and the bassist Armando Figueiredo , and with the support of the Fado singer João Braga , Katia Guerreiro recorded the album Fado Maior in 2001 . The album, which was distributed by the Ocarina label, received a lot of international attention and was even sold in Japan and South Korea . Among other pieces, it contained fados made famous by Amália Rodrigues , who had a major influence on Guerreiro and who had died the year before, as well as settings of poems by Fernando Pessoa , Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and António Lobo Antunes.

In 2003 the album Nas Mãos do Fado ( In the hands of Fado ) was also released on Ocarina . The title relates to Guerreiro's characteristic stage poses in which she sings with her hands closed on her back. She will again read texts by António Lobo Antunes and dedicate herself for the first time to her second great role model, Dulce Pontes .

The presence of Dulce Pontes intensified on the following 2005 album, Tudo ou Nada , for which Pontes wrote a piece, Dulce Caravela . The album was released by Som Livre and was the most successful by Kátia Guerreiro at that time. It contained a version of Saudades do Brasil em Portugal by Antônio Carlos Jobim , and a version of Menina do Alto da Serra , with which Tonicha won the 1971 RTP da Canção Festival . The jazz pianist Bernardo Sassetti could also be heard on this record, in the piece Minha Senhora das Dores . Guerreiro sang texts by António Lobo Antunes once more and paid homage to the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.

In the same year she was named by Aníbal Cavaco Silva as youth representative when he successfully ran for the post of Portuguese President .

In 2006 a CD box with their first records was released. The album Tudo Ou Nada made a new recording with bonus tracks with the participation of the Brazilian Ney Matogrosso .

Her album Fado also received good reviews internationally and reached number 20 in the Portuguese charts at the end of 2008.

Kátia Guerreiro has given concerts all over the world, among others in Egypt , Azores (Port.), Brazil , Bulgaria , France , Goa (India), Greece , Japan , New Caledonia , Macau , Morocco , the Netherlands , Portugal , Russia , Sweden , Switzerland , Spain and Turkey . She also sang duets, e.g. B. with Maria Bethânia , and appeared more often on television.
