In 2011, eleven Portuguese citizens were consularly registered in Qatar, while in 2015 there were no citizens of Qatar registered in Portugal.

history

Section of the Cantino Planisphere (1502) with the region between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf

The Portuguese fleet under Tristão da Cunha and Afonso de Albuquerque established Portuguese supremacy in the Persian Gulf from 1507 . Thus the region of today's Qatar remained in the area of influence of the Portuguese colonial empire , which however did not set up any major bases here.

The region was controlled by Portugal through its possession of Hormuz , from 1622 through Muscat . After Muscat fell to the Omanis in 1650, the Portuguese lost their supremacy in the region, but remained with ships and sporadic alliances until the 18th century, when the British finally ousted them completely.

Qatar remained under British influence and gained independence in 1971.

The Estado Novo regime in Portugal came to an end with the 1974 Carnation Revolution . After returning to democracy, Portugal reorganized its external relations from the ground up, gave its colonies independence and entered into direct relations with a large number of other countries.

Qatar and Portugal established diplomatic relations on May 1, 1982, and on December 4, 1989 , with the Portuguese ambassador to Saudi Arabia, José Manuel de Matos Parreira , a Portuguese representative was accredited for the first time in Qatar. Portugal set up its own embassy there in 2011.

Qatar opened its embassy in Portugal in 2012, and Adel Ali al-Khal became the first Qatari ambassador to Lisbon on January 10, 2012.

Portugal maintains its embassy in the Aamal Tower on West Bay in the Qatari capital Doha . There are no other consulates in Portugal.

In the same period, Qatar delivered goods worth EUR 13.9 million to Portugal ( 2015 : 19.1 million; 2014 : 16.9 million; 2013 : 132.7 million; 2012 : 64.4 million) , of which 93.9% plastics (especially polyethylene and polypropylene ), 3.5% chemical products and 1.5% clothing.
