The Bahraini-Portuguese relations describe the interstate relationship between Bahrain and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1976.

Their bilateral relations are considered good, but still underdeveloped. In addition to the historical presence of Portugal in the 16th and 17th centuries, today the exchange of goods, which can still be expanded, and the cooperation in international organizations, especially the various UN bodies, should be mentioned .

In 2014, there were 67 Portuguese citizens registered in the Arab archipelago of Bahrain; in 2015, four Bahraini citizens were registered in Portugal, two in the Porto district and two in the Portalegre district .

Portugal's admiral Afonso de Albuquerque built up a trade network for the Portuguese trade with India in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman from 1507 . The central hub was the Persian island of Hormuz , from which the bases were controlled and administered.

The places and factories that Albuquerque subjugated or rebuilt also included the villages of today's Bahrain, whose area became Portuguese from 1515. The Portuguese fort Qalʿat al-Bahrain should be mentioned in particular . Around 1621 the islands of today's Bahrain came under Persian sovereignty again. After the final loss of Hormuz in 1622 to the Persian Safavid dynasty , the Portuguese moved their regional headquarters to Muscat until they were completely expelled from the region around 1650. From then on, the islands of Bahrain, like the entire region, came under British influence.

After Bahrain gained independence from Great Britain in 1971, the country entered into diplomatic relations with Portugal on July 10, 1976. On 10 July 1989 accredited with José Manuel de Matos Waddington Parreira Portugal representatives, Saudi Arabia , the first time a Portuguese Ambassador to Bahrain. The countries then did not open mutual embassies.

On the fringes of the 71st UN General Assembly , the Bahraini Foreign Minister met his Portuguese colleague Augusto Santos Silva in September 2016 to also deepen mutual relations.

Portugal does not have an embassy in Bahrain, but is double-accredited there with its ambassador in the Saudi capital Riyadh . Portuguese consulates are also not set up in Bahrain.

Bahrain also has no representation of its own in Portugal; in addition to its embassy in the French capital Paris , Bahrain has a representation in Brussels for the states of the EU . Bahrain also has no consulates in Portugal.

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP does not have a branch in Bahrain; the AICEP office at the Portuguese Embassy in Saudi Arabia is responsible.

In 2016, Portugal exported goods and services worth 5.3 million euros to Bahrain ( 2015 : 30.4 million; 2014 : 7.2 million; 2013 : 3.6 million; 2012 : 4.3 million .). With 21.6% minerals and ores (especially stone goods and building materials), 17.6% machines and devices (especially telecommunications devices), 14.1% metal goods, 13.8% clothing and 7.5% agricultural products, the most important commodity groups were.

In the same period, Bahrain delivered goods worth EUR 0.3 million to Portugal ( 2015 : 0.6 million; 2014 : 1.1 million; 2013 : 3.5 million; 2012 : 0.0 million) . The most important goods groups were minerals and ores (especially glass fibers), 41.6% plastics (especially foils), 6.2% machines and devices, 6.0% textile materials and 1.6% Vehicles and vehicle parts.

This made Bahrain 118th place for buyers and 154th place for suppliers in Portuguese foreign trade, while Portugal was 111th place among buyers and 52nd place among suppliers in Bahraini foreign trade.

Sports

The Bahraini national soccer team and the Portuguese national team have not yet met (as of February 2017).

The U-20 selection of Bahrain took part in the qualifying round for the Junior World Cup in Portugal in 1991 , but could not qualify.
