history

Portuguese KFOR forces deployed at Pristina Airport

After the end of the Kosovo war , NATO founding member Portugal participated in the multinational KFOR forces to secure the UN Kosovo resolution in 1999. Portuguese armed forces have been serving in Kosovo since then , in particular parachute infantry and artillery units.

Portugal recognized Kosovar's unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on October 7, 2008. Since 2009 the Portuguese ambassador in Budapest has been accredited as Portugal's chief diplomat in the Kosovar capital Pristina .

Defense Minister Azeredo Lopes announced in October 2016 that Portugal would cease military operations in Kosovo after 18 years, as the security situation had steadily improved. After between 300 and 400 Portuguese soldiers were stationed in Kosovo from 1999 to 2001, their number had decreased to 189 by autumn 2016, corresponding to the reduced KFOR overall strength. Since 1999 a Portuguese soldier has been killed, Primeiro Cabo José Luís Madeira Bernardino from 1º BIMec ( Mechanized Infantry Battalion ) died there on March 16, 2010.
