José Alberto de Azeredo Ferreira Lopes (born June 20, 1961 in Porto ) is a Portuguese politician and lawyer. He was a university professor and from November 26, 2015 until his resignation on October 12, 2018, he was Minister for National Defense of the República Portuguesa in the Costa I cabinet . He was succeeded by João Cravinho .

Azeredo Lopes has a teaching license with a master and doctorate in law from the Faculty of Law of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa acquired in Porto, where he is also a university professor. He has taught in the field of international law and has published papers on human rights in armed conflict and the United Nations' operation in Somalia to combat piracy off the Somali coast .

He is also Head of Cabinet of the Mayor of Porto. There he devoted himself to studies of maritime affairs and ocean management with scientific interest . His concern is that any future government of Portugal must take greater account of the role of the navy in order to ensure the "creation of an effective presence in our sea" in a government program.

Azeredo Lopes was auditor at the International Law Academy in The Hague in 1990 and rapporteur on various missions and international working groups, particularly in East Timor . He was director of the Porto Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Portugal (2005–2006) and of the Department of International Studies at the same university from 1993 to 2004. Lopes was also a member of a working group on the public on television.
