João Soares

João Barroso Soares (born August 29, 1949 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese politician of the Partido Socialista (PS). He was Mayor of Lisbon from 1995 to 2002 and Minister of Culture in the Costa I cabinet from November 24, 2015 to April 8, 2016 ; he resigned because of a dispute with a cartoonist.

Life

João Soares' parents were the politician Mário Soares and the actress Maria Barroso . He studied law at the University of Lisbon . In the 1987 parliamentary elections , he was first elected to the Assembleia da República for the Partido Socialista and was active there in the following legislative periods : 1987 to 1991, 2002 to 2005, 2005 to 2009, 2009 to 2011 and since 2011 as a member of parliament.

Before being elected Mayor of Lisbon, he was City Councilor for Culture from 1989 to 1995. In 1995 he was elected Mayor of Lisbon.

For a short time he was also a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 1995. In 2008 and 2009 he was also President of the OSCE Assembly .
