Maria Barroso
Maria de Jesus Simões Barroso Soares (born May 2, 1925 in Fuseta , Olhão ; † July 7, 2015 in São Domingos de Benfica , Lisbon ) was a Portuguese actress and politician . As the wife of Mário Soares , she was Primeira-dama of Portugal from March 1986 to March 1996 .
Life
Maria Barroso, who never gave up her maiden name, was born as the daughter of the military Alfredo José Barroso and Maria da Encarnação Simões. She was an aunt of the chronicler and former Secretary of State Alfredo Barroso and the surgeon Eduardo Barroso.
She attended the D. Filipa de Lencastre and Pedro Nunes high schools in Lisbon. This was followed by a study of dramatic art at the Escola de Teatro do Conservatório Nacional , which she graduated in 1943. She then studied history and philosophy at the Faculty of Literature at the University of Lisbon until 1951 . There she met Mário Soares, whom she married on February 22, 1949 in the Aljube political prison .
In addition to her studies, she pursued her career as an actress at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II . She made her stage debut in 1944 under the direction of Palmira Bastos in the play Aparências by Jacinto Benavente . She later joined the ensemble of Amélia Rey Colaço and Robles Monteiro . She also took on roles in films by Paulo Rocha (1966 - Mudar de Vida ) and Manoel de Oliveira (1975 - Benilde, Virgin and Mother , 1979 - The Doom of Love , 1985 - The Silk Shoe ). She was director of the Colégio Moderno , founded by her father-in-law João Lopes Soares , until she handed over the management to her daughter Isabel Barroso Soares .
During the time of the Estado Novo , her license to teach in public and private institutions was revoked. She was a member of the opposition in 1969 and in 1973 in Aveiro on the III. Movement's Congress the only woman to speak during the opening session. In April 1973 she co-founded the Partido Socialista in Bad Münstereifel and, after the Carnation Revolution, was a member of the Assembleia da República until 1982 .
As Primeira-dama, she stood up for family values. In 1990 she founded the Emergência Moçambique movement . In 1995 she took over the chairmanship of the activities for the year of the fight against racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and social exclusion. From 1997 to 2003 she was President of the Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa . In addition, from 1994 she was co-founder and president of the board of directors of the human rights organization Pro Dignitate - Fundação de Direitos Humanos .
On July 7, 2015, Maria Barroso died in Hospital da Cruz Vermelha in Lisbon after falling into a coma at home.
