Fuseta , older also Fuzeta , is a place and a former municipality on the Algarve coast in southern Portugal .

history

Republic Square, panorama

Probably at the end of the Reconquista in the High Middle Ages , the Atalaia de Bias or Torre de Bias was the first defensive fortification off the coast, possibly as early as the 11th or 12th century. It then experienced several expansions, demolitions and modifications, especially in the 16th century.

The present community probably originated in the 15th century when fishermen from the region settled here permanently after they had only set up simple huts to fish here seasonally. It is said to have been fishermen from here who rediscovered Newfoundland with João Vaz Corte-Real around 1500 , and who had previously been fishing for stockfish in the waters of northern Europe, the Pesca do Bacalhau .

The oldest recorded mention of the place comes from the year 1572, at that time still as Fozeta . This original place name is a diminutive of Foz ( Portuguese for mouth), and referred to a small river Tronco that flows here.

In 1784 the municipality of Fuseta became independent by being separated from the municipality of Moncarapacho. Later it was raised to a small town ( Vila ).

Since the territorial reform of 2013 , Fuseta and Moncarapacho together form the entire municipality of Moncarapacho e Fuseta .

administration

Fuseta was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district of Olhão in the Faro district . The community had 1917 inhabitants and an area of 0.36 km² (as of June 30, 2011).

The community consisted of two places:

  • Fuseta
  • Ilha da Fuseta

As part of the regional reform in Portugal on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Fuseta and Moncarapacho were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Moncarapacho e Fuseta .

The Fuzeta-A stop

traffic

The first Fuzeta station on the Linha do Algarve railway line opened on September 1, 1904. With the Fuseta-Moncarapacho station and the Fuzeta-A stop, the municipality has two stops on the railway line.

The next access to the trunk road is junction 15 of the A22 motorway in Moncarapacho, about 5 km to the north. Fuseta is also integrated into the Algarve road network via the nearby national road N125.

Fuseta in literature

The German author Holger Karsten Schmidt created a crime series under his pseudonym Gil Ribeiro that takes place here. The first volume was published in 2017 under the title Lost in Fuseta .
