Pechão is a town and municipality on the Algarve coast in southern Portugal .

history

The archaeological finds in the municipality are not very numerous, but show the first human traces from the Neolithic Age , including axes made of cut stone. The finds at the Torrejão estate date from the time of the Roman occupation. Little traces can be found from the Moorish times since 716. The most important estate was known as Bela Mandil (from the Arabic Belad al Mandil, something like: cloth possession or land of cloth).

After the Christian Reconquista , King D. Dinis Bela gave Mandil to the knight Lourenço Domingos in 1280 in order to continue to produce linen, bread (wheat), wine and fruit, a quarter of which had to be given to the king. No noteworthy documents can be found from the following period.

The oldest known building in the village of Pechão is the São Bartolomeu chapel, built in 1482 , where the parish church now stands. The present municipality was only managed as an independent entity in 1680, but a document from 1577 indicates that it was previously independent.

In 1808 the municipality was the scene of battles during the Napoleonic invasions .

In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1820 , the municipality of Pechão was spun off from the Faro district and joined the newly created Olhão district.

The lack of own documents on the history of the congregation is mainly attributed to the Miguelistenkrieg . During this civil war between the absolutists and the victorious liberals in the end , the church of Pechão was occupied in 1833 and fell victim to skirmishes. Most of the community archives were burned.

In 1902 the construction of the Linha do Algarve railway reached the municipality of Pechão.

In the course of history, the municipality of Pechão repeatedly lost territories to the constantly growing neighboring municipality of Olhão, which has been the seat of its own district since 1826. Today, Pechão does not have its own connection to the Linha do Algarve.
