Quelfes is a village and a municipality in the Algarve in southern Portugal .
The Ilha da Armona , which lies in front of the neighboring district town of Olhão , belongs to the municipality of Quelfes. This means that part of the municipality of Quelfes lies in the Ria Formosa Nature Park .
history
The Romans already maintained estates here, especially the archaeological excavation site at the Villa Quinta de Marim . A Roman bridge also bears witness to the time. In the following epochs, the area remained characterized by agriculture and scattered estates and settlements, from which villages developed only slowly.
The oldest building in today's Quelfes is the parish church, which has existed since at least 1518.
Quelfes became an independent municipality in 1614. Among the localities of the municipality, only the southern port town of Olhão was characterized by stronger growth. In 1695 it became a separate municipality through outsourcing.
In the earthquake of 1755 the parish church of Quelfes suffered severe damage and was then rebuilt.
The place and the region suffered further destruction in the course of the first Napoleonic invasions . In 1808 a battle took place at the Roman bridge in Quelfes, in which the French troops were defeated.
In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1820 , Olhão became a separate district and the municipality of Quelfes was dissolved in 1838. However, this dissolution was never actually implemented, and so the restoration of the Quelfes parish in 1933 only became a legal formality.
The steady growth of the neighboring municipality of Olhão to the south also recently affected Quelfes, and new residential areas and a shopping center, Ria Shopping , were built in the direction of Olhão .
