Moncarapacho is a small town ( Vila ) and former municipality on the Algarve coast in southern Portugal .

geography

Moncarapacho is located southwest of the Serra de Monte Figo . It is 6 km north of the district capital Olhão, and about 16 km northeast of the district capital Faro .

history

Finds such as the remains of a number of watchtowers and surrounding fortification traces prove that the area was already settled before the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century BC. BC who made it part of their Lusitania Province . After the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD, the Moors drove them from the early 8th century and the area became part of al-Andalus . In the course of the Reconquista , today's municipality, together with the whole of the Algarve, became part of the Kingdom of Portugal around 1250 .

The first official mention of today's location is documented in a letter from King D. Fernando I from 1368 . In 1471 the place was raised to a vila (small town) and has since been the seat of an independent municipality.

Culture and sights

A number of remains of various watchtowers and fortifications from different eras can be seen in the parish. The local monuments also include historical public buildings, a windmill, two mansions and various sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Moncarapacho (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça ), which was built in the 15th century and has since been rebuilt several times Gothic to Baroque shows. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.

In the Museu Paroquial de Moncarapacho there are local archaeological and ethnographic exhibits, but also sculptures and sacred art.

Moncarapacho was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Olhão in the Faro district . 7699 inhabitants lived in it on an area of ​​69 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
