action

Homesickness and memories, especially the memory of Julia, drove Adelino home from distant Angola to the small Portuguese fishing village on the Atlantic coast, decayed by the forces of nature and social hardship. But Julia has long since become his brother Raimundo's wife; The children and the hard work have consumed her, and she sees in the homecomer only a troublemaker who harasses her with his accusations. Adelino finds it difficult to get into the rhythm of village life. An old accident injury prevents him from hiring on a fishing trawler; all that remains for him is the job of the fishermen's guild in the village, which he doesn't seem to be able to cope with either, and one day he collapses.

Julia looks after her childhood friend. She pleads with him again and again to turn his back on the village soon. But Adelino stays, and one day he catches a young woman in the little church plundering the offering box. She escapes him, but he meets her again and wins not only her trust but also her affection. The beautiful one is Albertina, the sister of his boss Inácio, a wild girl who is only looking for an opportunity to get up and away.

One day the time finally comes: when Adelino comes from Juliet's deathbed, he meets Albertina on the run from her brother. She stole from Inácio, who swore to shoot her. Adelino succeeds in persuading the girl to return the money: “We don't need it. We can still work. "

Reviews

The Protestant film observer summarized his criticism after the German television premiere as follows: “The young director Paulo Rocha criticizes the social conditions of the country using the example of a handful of fishermen in an Atlantic village. Its mixture of game plot and documentation thrives on the astonishing black and white contrast of the images, the restrained representation and the extremely rich folk music, especially the Fado melodies. ”The lexicon of international films comes to the following assessment:“ A very sober film by Paulo Rocha, whose socially critical approach gets stuck in the description of an individual fate.
