Pedro Manuel Dias de Jesus Marques (born August 1, 1976 in Alcochete or Lisbon ) is a Portuguese politician of the Partido Socialista (PS). From 2015 to 2019 he was Minister for Planning and Infrastructure in the Costa I cabinet . Since July 2, 2019, he has been a member of the European Parliament of the Party of European Socialists in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament .

Life

Pedro Marques completed a degree in economics in 1997, and in 2001 he obtained a master's degree in international economy. In 2001/02 he worked in the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. From 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Montijo City Council , where he was responsible for health, social and economic development, housing, youth and planning. From March 2005 to June 2011 he was State Secretary for Social Security under Prime Minister José Sócrates .

From 2009 to 2014 he was a member of the Assembleia da República , the Portuguese parliament, in the 11th and 12th electoral terms ; in the 11th legislative period as a representative of the Setúbal constituency and in the 12th legislative period as a representative of the Portalegre constituency . From 2011 he also acted there as deputy chairman of the socialist parliamentary group. In October 2014 he became a member of the Management Board of Capgemini Portugal.

From November 26, 2015 to February 18, 2019, he was Minister for Planning and Infrastructure in the Costa I Cabinet ( XXI Governo Constitucional de Portugal ). The Partido Socialista (PS) nominated him as the top candidate for the European elections in Portugal 2019 . The PS won 9 of the 21 Portuguese seats with 33.38 percent, so that Marques moved in directly. Like his party colleagues, he joined the Social Democratic parliamentary group . For the parliamentary group he is a member of the Committee on Regional Development and a deputy member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs .

In August 2019, the Portuguese government listed him alongside Elisa Ferreira as a candidate for EU commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission , but Ferreira prevailed.
