history

1992 saw Albania became the first state to the 2. July 1991 by Ibrahim Rugova proclaimed Republic of Kosova to ( de jure ).

After Kosovo's official declaration of independence on February 17, 2008 , Albania achieved full recognition under international law ( de facto ) the following day ; from the Albanian point of view it was only a matter of establishing diplomatic relations. Albania supports the efforts of Kosovo for international recognition .

Albanian Union

The unification of the Albanians in a single state is a demand that has been repeatedly expressed. At the political level there have never been any efforts in this direction. In April 2017, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said that he could no longer rule out an “Albanian Union” if there was no longer any prospect of integration into the European Union for the states of the Western Balkans . Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha had already spoken of unification of Kosovo with Albania in 2009, after ruling out this before. Such statements are always associated with the ongoing election campaigns in Albania.

In addition to reunification, there are other efforts to bring the countries closer together.

The governments of Kosovo and Albania are already working closely together in many areas and are coordinating with one another. The two governments meet regularly in Albania and Kosovo. Kosovo and Albania share common administrative sectors such as education and police training. The textbooks of Kosovo as well as the Albanian minority in Serbia were provided by the Albanian Ministry of Education and are being jointly developed today. There is also a coordinated foreign policy. A joint consulate was opened in Milan in 2014 and in Munich in 2016 .

The exchange of goods between the two countries is constantly being simplified. Since the beginning of 2019 there has been a customs office of the Republic of Kosovo in the port of Durrës , which means that the import of goods to Kosovo can be processed more quickly and the Vërmica / Morina border crossing is relieved. Albania and Kosovo are gradually harmonizing their customs systems and are striving for a customs union in the long term .
