The Albanian-Hungarian relations ( Albanian  Marrëdhëniet shqiptaro-hungareze ; Hungarian Albán-magyar kapcsolatok ) are historically related to Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire . Hungary is a close supporter of Albania in its ambitions for membership in the European Union .

history

Caricature from 1916: Austro-Hungarian occupation of Albania during the First World War

Shaped by the centuries-long rule of the Ottomans on the Balkan Peninsula , Albania and Hungary had long political sympathies for each other. During the battle on the Amselfeld in 1448 , the Hungarians under the military leader Johann Hunyadi founded a Roman Catholic alliance with Wallachia and the Albanians , which were led by Prince Skanderbeg . But on the way to the slaughter, his army was lured into a Serbian ambush led by the Serbian despot Đurađ Branković . Branković wanted to counteract the expansion of the Roman Catholic alliance ( more on this in the articles Johann Hunyadi and Battle on the Blackbird Field (1448) ).

The Albanian-Hungarian relations then deepened again in the 20th century. 20 days before the Albanians proclaimed their political independence from the Ottoman Empire in the port city of Vlora on November 28, 1912 , they received full support for their political projects from the official Austro-Hungarian side. The Austro-Hungarian Foreign Minister Leopold Berchtold and the later Hungarian Prime Minister János Hadik promised the later first Prime Minister of Albania, Ismail Qemali , political support for the Albanians through the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy. From then on the Albanian-Hungarian "partnership" begins.

In 1938 the Albanian King Ahmet Zogu married the Hungarian Countess Geraldine Apponyi , with whom he had a son, Leka Zogu . During the Cold War , the People's Republic of Albania and the Hungarian People's Republic maintained economic and political relations under their joint membership in the Warsaw Pact .

During the Hungarian EU Council Presidency in 2011 , the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared that Albania should receive EU candidate status by the end of 2011. However, Tirana received a negative response from the European Commission at the time . It was not until October 2012 that it recommended accepting candidate status for Albania, but with three conditions ( see also Albania and the European Union ).

Stress on relationships

So far, relations between the Southeast and Eastern European countries have only been partially affected by one major case. At the end of January 2012, Albania and Kosovo agreed to manage the Kosovar airspace (over 8500  m ), which has been closed since 1999. According to this, the Albanian civil aviation authority should take over the administrative tasks alone in the future. The Albanians are supported by the United States . However, Hungary is also in the race for this airspace and is seen by NATO as a suitable administrator. However, there were no further economic burdens; Hungary invests millions of euros annually in Albania's economy .
