Diplomatic relations have existed between Albania and the Holy See since 1991. Albania has an embassy in Vatican City and an Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See is in Tirana .

history

The Apostolic Nunciature in Albania was first established on November 12, 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. set up as an Apostolic Delegation. This was dissolved in 1940 after Albania was occupied by Italy .

After the Second World War, religious practice and the church in communist Albania were increasingly restricted, and many priests were arrested and killed. In 1967 relations were shattered by the newly enacted religious ban and the persecution of Catholic priests and bishops in Albania.

After the fall of the communist regime in 1990, Ivan Dias was appointed first envoy to Albania by Pope John Paul II on January 16, 1991 . A delegation from the Vatican also visited the country on May 18, 1991, whereupon diplomatic relations between Albania and the Holy See were officially established on September 7 of the same year. On April 25, 1993 Pope John Paul II visited Albania.

In 2002 a basic treaty was signed that regulates relations between Albania and the Holy See.

On October 19, 2003, the Albanian Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Beatification Day is celebrated in Albania as a national holiday on which authorities and schools are closed.

In addition to the basic agreement that had existed since 2002, the then Albanian finance minister Ridvan Bode and Nutius John Bulaitis signed a financial agreement for both countries in Tirana on December 3, 2007, which includes, among other things, agreements on the tax position of the Catholic Church in Albania.

In September 2014 Pope Francis visited the Albanian capital Tirana.
