Diplomatic relations have existed between Albania and Croatia since 1992 after Albania recognized Croatia at the beginning of the year. There is cooperation in several areas, which will be expanded further. Numerous bilateral agreements are currently in force between the two countries, and further intensification is planned for the future, especially in business and trade. Regular visits and exchanges - also at the highest level - are considered constructive by both partner countries and further promote good relations. According to the Albanian Embassy, ​​there are no disputes among each other, but rather the same views and positions regarding the situation in the region are shared.

The two countries joined NATO together , and EU member Croatia supports the integration of Albania into the European Union.

In 1934 King Zogu of Albania appointed three honorary consuls in Zagreb , Split and Dubrovnik .

After Croatia officially declared itself independent from Yugoslavia in June 1991 , Albania recognized the new state on January 21, 1992. Diplomatic relations were then established on August 25, 1992. During the War of Independence from 1991 to 1995 Albanians - such as Rahim Ademi - fought on the Croatian side, for which the Croatian state expressed its gratitude in 2016.

In April 2009 both countries became members of NATO at the same time. In the run-up to this accession, they intensified their cooperation in defense and security policy. Croatia's accession to the EU on July 1, 2013 was welcomed by the Albanian side.

There is also close cooperation in the economic area. In 2017, the joint trade volume between the two economies amounted to 61.47 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 20% compared to the previous year. In 2014 it was 46.330 million euros. More and more Croatian companies are investing in Albania or opening up the Albanian market for themselves. In 2013, 13.870 million euros in direct investments came from Croatia to Albania. On the other hand, more and more Albanian companies are expanding to Croatia.

In 2009 the heads of government of both countries expressed their will to build a jointly used nuclear power plant near Shkodra .

Representations

There is both an Albanian embassy in Zagreb and a Croatian embassy in Tirana . Albania also appointed an honorary consul in Dubrovnik .

Ethnic groups

In 2011, the census counted 17,513 Albanians in Croatia . Some of them belong to a long -established Albanian minority in Istria and Dalmatia , which is also recognized as such in the Croatian constitution .

honors and awards

The Albanian Embassy in Croatia awards a certificate of merit named after Milan von Šufflay to people, institutions or organizations who work for relationships and contribute to friendship between the two peoples. It is traditionally awarded to one Albanian and one Croatian each year on the national holiday of Albania (November 28th).

Three Albanian presidents have so far been awarded the Velered kralja Tomislava , the highest order of merit in the Republic of Croatia: Rexhep Meidani (2001), Alfred Moisiu (2007) and Bamir Topi (2009).
