Dona Rosa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rosa Francelina Dias Martins (born February 1, 1957 in Porto ) is a Portuguese singer of Fado , who became known under the name Dona Rosa .

Life

Born into a destitute family, she went blind at the age of four following meningitis . When she was supposed to go to her parents in Ovar as an adolescent after staying in various facilities for the blind , she went to Lisbon instead . She joined the homeless and poor there and, like her, sold lots, flowers and other things in the streets. She began to sing the folk songs she was taught as a teenager.

The Austrian André Heller heard her in the lower town of Lisbon when she sang her songs as usual, accompanying herself with a triangle. He engaged her for his planned TV show in Morocco for ORF , where she surprised both the audience and those involved in the production with her original, uninhibited manner, which differed from the appearance of other musicians. The contrast between her cheerful, simple manner and her expressive, emotional singing were another reason for the strong interest in her that began. She then signed the Jaro label from Bremen and performed at the world music fair Womex 2000 in Berlin , whereupon the press and concert organizers became interested in her and her unusual life story. Increased media reports were the result, for example in the ARD broadcast Kulturreport .

She subsequently recorded three CDs and performed on numerous international tours, for example at the great New Year's Concert in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) in 2008, on Polish radio, or in 2007 in Taiwan . According to her own statement, her life has improved materially, but she essentially kept her previous lifestyle. Even after her worldwide guest appearances and three CD releases she continued to sing in the streets of Lisbon's lower city.

In 2012 her label Jaro released her fourth album, Sou Luz .

style

Their repertoire and instrumentation are predominantly not part of traditional Fado . However, Dona Rosa is mostly referred to as a Fado singer, because of the simplistic marketing, but above all because of the emotional depth of her singing, which is therefore similar to Fado. Her lecture is influenced by traditional Fado, especially the lively and impulsive singing style of Amália Rodrigues .

Dona Rosa stands in the tradition of Fado Castiço , the popular Fado, which is sung spontaneously and not professionally by the residents in the neighborhood taverns of the old Lisbon quarters such as the Alfama or the Bairro Alto . The press photos of Dona Rosa in the streets of Lisbon also bring her close to the traditional fado. However, their repertoire is more determined by folk songs and folk fado songs.
