Octavio Neto Valério

Octávio Neto Valério (* 1930 , † 2019 in Cascais ) was a diplomat from Portugal .

Life

After joining the Foreign Service of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry , he became an ambassador himself . He first became fully responsible head of an embassy in 1985 when he became Portuguese ambassador to China . He was part of the commission that negotiated the transfer of Macau to the People's Republic of China. Macau had been a Portuguese overseas possession since the 16th century . Neto Valério was involved in the Sino-Portuguese treaty, which was signed on April 13, 1987 by China's Prime Minister Zhao Ziyang and Portugal's President Aníbal Cavaco Silva and which laid down the handover of Macau to the People's Republic of China in 1999.

On September 15, 1989, Neto Valério was awarded the Grand Cross of the Portuguese Order of Merit by the President of Portugal .

In 1989 he left China and became Portugal's representative in Switzerland and was also Portugal's ambassador to Liechtenstein . In 1993 he moved to the neighboring country to the east, where he became the Portuguese ambassador in Austria , thus also representing Portugal in Slovenia .

In 1995, Neto Valério went into diplomatic retirement.

In 2019 Neto Valério died in Cascais county . In its obituaries , the Portuguese press mainly recalled Valério's achievements in the negotiations on the transfer of Macau to China.
