Horton began his professional career with the Oshawa Generals in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League before he was selected in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft as third in the first round of the Florida Panthers .

In his first NHL season , Horton played 55 games for the Panthers, in which he scored 14 goals and eight assists . During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , the attacker was on the ice for the San Antonio Rampage in the American Hockey League and then returned to the Panthers roster. 2007 Horton signed in Florida a six-year contract that him 24 million dollars earned. In June 2010 he was given in an exchange deal to the Boston Bruins , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2010/11 season .

In July 2013, Horton signed a seven-year contract valued at $ 37.1 million with Columbus Blue Jackets . The average annual salary is $ 5.3 million. In October 2014, however, Horton was diagnosed with degenerative back disease, although it remains unclear whether he will be able to continue his active career. Nevertheless, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed him in February 2015 to hand over David Clarkson at the same time and thus make room in the salary cap .
