Daniel "Dan" Girardi (born April 29, 1984 in Welland , Ontario ) is a former Italian - Canadian ice hockey player . The defender made over 1,000 appearances for the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League between 2007 and 2019 .

Girardi began his career in the Ontario Hockey League with the Barrie Colts , Guelph Storm and the London Knights . With Guelph and London he won the OHL championship in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In his last junior year, he also won the traditional Memorial Cup with the Knights .

After his junior years, the defender moved undrafted to the Charlotte Checkers in the ECHL . After only seven games that took him Hartford Wolf Pack , the American Hockey League - the farm team of the New York Rangers , under contract. Through a very good season in Hartford, in which he was appointed to the all-rookie team, he received a contract with the Rangers. Since the middle of the 2006/07 season he was an integral part of the New York squad.

In June 2017, the Rangers announced that they would buy out his three remaining contract years , so that he was considered a free agent from July 1, 2017 and then signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning . Girardi was active there for another two years before ending his active career in September 2019 after a total of more than 1000 NHL games.
