Hylocereus stenopterus is a species of plant in the genus Hylocereus fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae).

description

Hylocereus stenopterus has a weak, liana-like spreading growth and is irregularly branched. The green, sometimes reddish, triangular shoots are deeply concave on the side surfaces. The ribs are almost straight or slightly flared. 1 to 3 thick, conical, light brown spines 1 to 3 millimeters long arise from the slightly raised areoles .

The salver-shaped flowers appear along the shoots and are 8 to 10 centimeters long. The flower tube is slightly curved upwards and only 2 centimeters long. The almost linear, pointed bracts are more or less purple and have white edges. The stamens are short and excellent. The white stylus sticks out very far. The spherical, shiny red fruits reach a diameter of up to 7 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Hylocereus stenopterus is widespread in Costa Rica in the Atlantic rainforest at low altitudes. The first description as Cereus stenopterus was published in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Hylocereus in 1909 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
