Shayne Wright (born June 30, 1975 in Welland , Ontario ) is a former German - Canadian ice hockey player (defender). In 1998/99 he played for the Canadian national team and had a total of 48 missions. Born in Canada, he took on German citizenship and played in the German national ice hockey team .
Career
Before turning to ice hockey, he played lacrosse and became Canadian junior champion. But finally the 183 cm tall and 94 kg heavy Blueliner decided for the Canadian national sport and began his junior career in 1992 with the Owen Sound Platers in the Ontario Hockey League .
Here he delivered a good rookie season and posted nine goals and 30 points. He also showed that he is a very physical player, recording 101 penalty minutes in his 62 games. After this good start he stayed for two more years, until 1995 in the OHL and with the Platers. In total, he came to 189 games, 32 goals, 127 points and 310 penalty minutes, and in the playoffs on 27 games, four goals and 23 points with 43 penalty minutes.
All of this led the Buffalo Sabers to drag him to position 277 in the eleventh round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft . During his last junior season, he also made his debut in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans , where he was able to post a template in four games. He really started his professional career in 1995/96, also with the Americans, and stayed with the team for a total of three years. By 1998 he played 198 games this season, in which he scored nine goals and 65 points with a penalty of 345 minutes. There were also 19 playoff games with two goals, eight points and 14 penalty minutes. The greatest success of his time in Rochester he was able to celebrate directly in his rookie season 1995/96, when the Americans were able to win the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL.
He decided to gain new experience in Team Canada and to tour the world with them for one season. Here he came to a total of 48 games with seven goals, 16 points and 52 penalty minutes. But before the end of the season he had found a new club, this time in Europe. For the ZSC Lions he played seven games with one goal, three points, 20 penalty minutes and the brilliant plus / minus statistics of +9, as well as seven playoff games with two more assists and ten penalty minutes, but this time with a plus / minus balance from −4. At this point, the former KEV coach Doug Mason became aware of him and brought him to the Krefeld Penguins .
Here he developed into one of the best defenders in the team, if not the league. In the 1999/2000 season he came in 55 games on nine goals, 23 points and +13 with 172 penalty minutes. He made his best games in the play-offs , but his two goals and four points in four games - after all, he was KEV top scorer as defender - could not prevent the elimination. In the following season, which was characterized by many problems in the team, he could not repeat this performance and moved to Kassel after 59 games, six goals, 18 points and −6 .
The two-year stay in Kassel with 103 games, ten goals, 45 points, 179 penalty minutes and +11, as well as in the playoffs another eleven games, one point, −3 and six penalty minutes, turned into an episode and he signed another two-year contract early on the Krefeld penguins . Together with Justin Kurtz , he should build the offensive from behind and help replace Dan Lambert , Mario Doyon and Christian Ehrhoff . Only two goals and eleven points from 52 games were offensively his weakest season - also because he played long injuries - in a Pinguine team that simply did not fit together and had many problems. After all, his plus / minus statistic with +1 was the best of all KEV defenders.
In the last season , now a German citizen, he launched the excellent season. At the start of the season he was regularly among the top players and was the best defender. How good his performance over the season was can also be seen from the fact that he was able to make his debut in the German national ice hockey team | German national team and was only removed from the 2005 World Cup squad by national coach Greg Poss at the very last moment after a month of injury .
His contract with the Krefeld Penguins ran until the end of the 2005/06 season , but due to an illness he only made six appearances during the season. For the 2006/07 season he signed a contract with the Eisbären Regensburg . But even in Regensburg he did not find his way back to his old strength and only scored three goals and nine points in 36 games. In 2007 Shayne Wright ended his professional career.
