history

Futura International Airways was founded in 1989 as a joint venture between Aer Lingus , Belton Air and Banco Santander . The first flight took place on February 17, 1990. In the 1990s, the company grew through its independent route structure, which relied on niche connections, across Europe.

In 2007 there was a cooperation with Cirrus Airlines from which Futura Germany emerged . The aircraft used came back to the parent company.

On September 8, 2008, Futura International Airways filed for bankruptcy because of around 50 million euros in debts and at the same time flight operations were suspended. The company had spoken out against wage concessions for employees. The authorities also spoke out against restructuring the company; in addition, GECAS had terminated leasing contracts for 15 aircraft because the installments were not paid on time. As a result, the license to fly was withdrawn two weeks later. Most recently, Futura had partially lent aircraft to Binter Canarias , ArkeFly and Air Algérie .

Futura had two subsidiaries: the Irish Futura Gael and the Spanish freight company FlyAnt Cargo . Both also ceased flight operations.
