Air Spain was a Spanish charter airline based at Palma de Mallorca Airport and headquartered in Madrid . The company ceased operations in January 1975 for financial reasons.
history
Air Spain was founded in Madrid on January 29, 1965 by private investors with the participation of General Rafael Garcia-Valino in order to offer IT charter flights from Western Europe to Spain. In May 1966, the company acquired two Bristol Britannia turboprop aircraft from British Eagle International Airlines and also agreed a three-year cooperation with this British company, which began training future Spanish pilots and technicians in London from June 27, 1966 . The first Bristol Britannia was delivered to Air Spain on October 1, 1966 and was initially used in ad hoc charter traffic from Palma de Mallorca Airport . The delivery of the second machine followed a month later.
At the beginning of the summer season, Air Spain flew mainly British and German package travelers to Spain from March 1967 , mainly to Palma de Mallorca . For this purpose, a third Bristol Britannia was acquired by the Israeli El Al in the same year and a fourth was taken over by the insolvent British Eagle in 1969 . The first two Douglas DC-8s leased from Eastern Air Lines joined the fleet in 1971. The company put two more of these jet aircraft into service in 1972 and 1973. At the same time, the Bristol Britannia were retired.
The company was unable to use its six aircraft to full capacity all year round and suffered considerable losses, especially in the winter months. In the autumn of 1974, the company began merger negotiations with Aviaco , but they were unsuccessful. After the failure of the talks, Air Spain ceased operations in January 1975 for economic reasons. The company was dissolved a month later.
