Transeuropa (officially Transeuropa Compañía de Aviación ) was a Spanish charter airline based in Palma de Mallorca Airport with headquarters in Madrid . The company ceased operations in 1982.

history

Transeuropa was founded in July 1965 in Madrid with the participation of the Spanish airlines Iberia and Aviaco as Trans Europa Compañía de Aviación (TECA). In September of the same year, the first occasional services ( ad hoc charter ) were carried out with a Douglas DC-7 . After the company was able to conclude long-term charter contracts with several tour operators in early 1966 , a total of three machines of this type were operated. In addition, the company acquired two Douglas DC-4s and two Douglas C-54s , which were used in freight transport within Spain until 1973.

In the period from July 1969 to February 1970, Transeuropa received three brand-new Sud Aviation Caravelle jet aircraft . The first two machines ( marked : EC-BRX and EC-BRY) were leased to Iberia on a long-term basis immediately after delivery . The third Caravelle (EC-FRJ) used Transeuropa in its own colors on IT charter flights mainly to Great Britain and West Germany . In 1974 the company got its leased aircraft back and retired the last Douglas DC-7C. In the following years, the pure Caravelle fleet was gradually increased with used machines. The maximum number was reached in 1979 when up to seven machines of this type were used simultaneously. In the same year the company received its first propeller aircraft of the type Fokker F-27 . Transeuropa took over a total of six Fokker F-27-600s and used them on behalf of Aviaco on their national route network as well as in shuttle traffic between the individual Canary Islands .

In the early 1980s, Transeuropa ran into economic difficulties due to insufficient utilization of its machines and too high operating costs. The airlines Iberia and Aviaco , which at the time held 60 percent and 40 percent respectively in the company, declined further financial support. Instead, the route network of Transeuropa was taken over by Aviaco in 1982 and the company dissolved. The charter airline Hispania , founded in autumn 1982, acquired four of the company's Caravelle, with which it began operations on April 28, 1983.
