history

Vueling headquarters in El Prat de Llobregat near Barcelona

Vueling was founded in 2004 and started its operations mainly from Barcelona . The name is a composition of vuelo (Spanish for flight ) and ing (English). Investors such as Inversiones Hemisferio from the Planeta Group , Apax Partners and some managers of the US airline JetBlue were behind the establishment . Initially, Vueling only flew to national destinations within Spain, but the route network was constantly expanded, so that destinations in other European countries were also added. The Spanish capital Madrid has also been a Vueling base since 2006, and Paris-Orly was added as a further base in the summer of 2007 , from which flights are offered for the first time that neither start nor land in Spain (e.g. Paris - Amsterdam ).

Since mid-2008, plans for a merger between Vueling and the Spanish low-cost airline Clickair were known. In November, the European competition authorities were formally notified of the merger. At the beginning of January 2009, the EU Commission approved the merger of the two airlines subject to certain conditions. The new company will continue to operate under the name Vueling. The requirements of the EU Commission concern landing rights at Barcelona Airport, as this was the home airport of both companies. The merger was completed on July 9, 2009, including 20 Airbus A320-200s from Clickair.

In April 2011 the company's two newest bases opened in Toulouse and Amsterdam . In February 2012, following the insolvency of the competing Spanair, an extensive expansion of the domestic Spanish and European route network was announced.

In March 2013, the International Airlines Group increased its stake in Vueling to 90.51 percent and thus became the majority owner. On August 14, 2013, IAG announced the order for 30 Airbus A320 and 32 A320neo for Vueling.

On July 2, 2016, there were riots due to numerous flight cancellations and delays at Vueling at Barcelona-El Prat Airport . Passengers protested loudly and asked for their money back. The police have moved in to prevent worse, the newspaper La Vanguardia reported online. A spokesman for the company apologized, but gave no reason for the numerous canceled flights to Paris, London and Málaga. Operational problems such as overuse of staff and aircraft are said to have been responsible. As a result, Vueling canceled numerous routes in the 2017 summer flight schedule, especially in Germany.

Vueling has not suffered a total loss of any of its aircraft or a fatal accident since it was founded.
