The company was founded on February 18, 1948. Initially, Aviaco had six Bristol Type 170s , three each as freight and passenger versions; the latter were equipped with 55 passenger seats. Freight operations began in 1948 with the Bilbao - Barcelona and Bilbao- Madrid routes , followed by passenger service with the Bilbao- Palma de Mallorca - Marseille route .

As early as the 1960s, Iberia took over a 65% majority in Aviaco, and subsequently Aviaco's activities were concentrated on less profitable domestic routes, but also on charter traffic from international destinations to Spanish holiday destinations.

In 1998, Iberia also acquired the remaining company shares and thus took over the company in its entirety. At the same time, Iberia made the decision to integrate its subsidiaries Aviaco and Viva Air into the parent company. After the pilots' unions had agreed to a merger, the Aviaco aircraft were repainted in Iberia colors from September 1, 1999.

Incidents

From 1949 to the cessation of operations in 1998, Aviaco had 19 accidents with total loss of the aircraft. 11 of these resulted in 244 deaths. Full list:

  • On December 4, 1953, a Bristol 170 Freighter Mk.21 (EC-AEG) flew into a ridge on a flight from Bilbao to Madrid-Barajas Airport, 20 minutes before arrival near Guaderrama. Of the 33 inmates, 23 were killed.
  • On May 9, 1957, came at a Bristol 170 Freighter Mk.21 the Aviaco (EC ADI) on a flight from Santiago de Compostela to Madrid Barajas Airport in the - under visual flown - traffic pattern for landing at a stall . The plane spun , crashed and caught fire. All 5 crew members and 32 passengers were killed.
  • On September 11, 1957, a Bristol 170 Freighter Mk.21E of Aviaco ( EC-AEH ) was irreparably damaged in a hard landing at Tetouan Airport . All inmates survived.
  • On October 26, 1957, the pilots of a De Havilland Heron 2D ( EC-AOA ) coming from Madrid-Barajas landed at San Sebastián Airport . Due to a leak in the brake system, it was not possible to stop the machine before the runway end. It rolled over into the morass in the estuary of the Bidasoa River. All 22 occupants, 17 passengers and the 5 crew members survived this accident. The plane was destroyed.
  • On November 15, 1957, only about two weeks later, the pilots of a De Havilland Heron 2D ( EC-ANZ ) coming from Barcelona flew on the approach to the airport Palma de Mallorca-Son San Juan 15 km from the airport in a good 400 meters high mountain. All 4 occupants, two passengers and the pilots, were killed as a result of this navigation error.
  • On April 14, 1958, the pilots of a De Havilland Heron 2D ( EC-ANJ ) approaching Barcelona-El Prat Airport were forced to perform a violent evasive maneuver in order to avoid a collision with another Heron. The machine got out of control and crashed into the sea. All 16 occupants were killed as a result of this air traffic controller error.
  • On December 4, 1958, an Aviaco ( EC-ANR ) Languedoc SNCASE crashed on a flight from Vigo to Madrid in the Guadarrama Mountains . All 5 crew members and 16 passengers were killed. The cause is suspected to be strong icing, which led to loss of control.
  • On March 13, 1959, a Bristol 170 Freighter Mk.21E of Aviaco (EC-ADH) made a sharp right turn on the final approach to Mahon-Menorca Airport (San Luis) at a height of about 120 meters and then fell to the ground, possibly triggered by a strong gust of wind . One of the passengers was killed, the other 17 occupants, 14 passengers and 3 crew members survived.
  • On 1 October 1961, a Bristol 170 Freighter was Mk.31E the Aviaco (EC-AHK) on the Ibiza airport irreparably damaged in a landing accident. All inmates survived.

  • On the night of March 5, 1973, a Caravelle 10R of Aviaco (EC-BID) was flown into the sea during the approach to Madeira airport . In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ) all three pilots (the only occupants) were killed.
  • On December 7, 1983 , a Boeing 727-200 from Iberia (EC-CFJ) and a rolling Douglas DC-9-32 from Aviaco (EC-CGS) collided at Madrid-Barajas Airport , and their pilots hit the active runway in the fog were rolled. 93 people were killed in the accident, 51 of 93 in the Boeing 727 and all 42 on board the Aviaco aircraft. As a consequence of this accident, all Spanish airports, in particular Barcelona and Madrid, were redesigned so that crossing an active runway is no longer necessary.
