The Thorold Tunnel is an underwater tunnel in Thorold , Ontario , Canada that runs Highway 58 under the Welland Canal . The tunnel was built between 1965 and 1967 and is 840 meters long. It consists of two separate tubes, each with two lanes. The western tube has a sidewalk for pedestrians.
Due to its relatively low traffic volume, the tunnel was used as a filming location, including for the television series American Gothic and the film Highwaymen .
