Tuen Mun

Tuen Mun ( Chinese  屯門  /  屯门 , Pinyin Túnmén , Jyutping Tyun 4 mun 4 ) colloquially for Tuen Mun New Town ( 屯門 新市鎮  /  屯门 新市镇 , Túnmén Xīn Shìzhèn , Jyutping Tyun 4 mun 4 San 1 Si 5 zan 3 ) is a satellite city in Hong Kong in the People's Republic of China . It is located in the southwest of the New Territories in the Tuen Mun District . It houses most of the residents of the district of the same name and forms the industrial, transport and cultural center. The campus of Lingnan University is located in Tuen Mun .

history

According to written records, the Portuguese trader Fernão Pires de Andrade landed on the south Chinese coast in 1517 to negotiate with traders from Canton . The Portuguese fleet went ashore on a Tuen Mun island and killed some residents.

Tuen Mun was a small fishing village until the middle of the 20th century. The first districts with huge skyscrapers for around 200,000 people were not completed until 1973. Today the city has half a million inhabitants.

Attractions

Near Tuen Mun, at the foot of the 583 meter high Castle Peak ( 青山 , Qīngshān , Jyutping Cing 4 saan 1 ), away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, lies the Taotic (also: Daotic) monastery Ching Chung Koon ( 青松 觀  /  青松观 , Qīngsōng Guàn , Jyutping Cing 4 cung 4 Gun 3 ) with temple , pavilion and garden with bonsai trees and lotus ponds. In the Taoist Temple , among other things, treasures from the Imperial Palace in Beijing can be viewed .

In a pond inhabited by turtles , visitors can throw coins in the hope of hitting one of the animals on the head, which, according to Chinese tradition , is said to bring good luck. A vegetarian restaurant is located in the monastery.
