Kowloon Dairy Limited ( Chinese  九龍 維 記 牛奶 有限公司  /  九龙 维 记 牛奶 有限公司 [since 1978], mostly short 維 記  /  维 记 ) is, alongside its competitors Trappist Dairy and Nestlé Dairy Farm, one of three manufacturers of dairy products in Hong Kong .

history

The company was founded in 1940 by George Ahwee and Rudy Choy ( 蔡永禧 ) as Kowloon Dairy ( 九龍 維 記  /  九龙 维 记 ) and financially supported by Li Lan Sang ( 李蘭生  /  李兰生 ), a racehorse owner . Initially, around 30 people were employed and northern Kowloon was supplied with fresh milk. The company was initially located in Ngau Chi Wan ( 牛 池 灣  /  牛 池 湾 ) in what is now the Choi Wan Estate ( 彩雲 邨  /  彩云 邨 ) in the Wong Tai Sin District . In this area, however, due to a decision by the Hong Kong government from 1972 onwards, land reclamation measures were carried out to make space for the construction of social housing (see New Towns ). Kowloon Dairy then moved to the New Territories and opened a new production facility in Tuen Mun . An approximately 0.2 hectare farm with more than 300 dairy cows was operated with automatic milking machines in Yuen Long Santin (Yuen Long San Tin, 元朗 新 田 ) . Since 1984 the cows have been kept in Guangzhou , mainland China , and the milk is imported to Hong Kong. The further processing and bottling of the milk still takes place in Tuen Mun; the company's headquarters are now in Central on the island . In 1992 the subsidiary The Kowloon Dairy (Guangzhou) Limited was founded in China in order to open up the Chinese market. Today you can find Kowloon Dairy's products in Hong Kong as well as in Macau and in the major cities of the provinces of Guangdong , Hainan , Fujian , Heilongjiang and Yunnan . Today the company has around 500 employees (as of 2019) .

Products

Kowloon Dairy offers a variety of milk and ice cream products. In addition to fresh milk (product name: 100% Fresh Milk) , some modified milk beverages are offered, including a variant with half the fat content (½ fat Fresh Milk) , milk with increased calcium content and 1.5% fat (1.5% Low Fat Hi-Calcium Slimilk) or 1.5% fat (0.3% Fat Hi-Calcium Skimmed) and a milk called Gold Medal with added vitamins A and D. Chocolate milk is available in two versions: Hi-Calcium Chocolate Slimilk and Deluxe Chocolate , which contains twice as much cocoa powder . Furthermore, are papaya milk , condensed milk , drinkable yogurt and soy milk offered in different variants and finally from Australia imported milk.

The classic packaging is small glass bottles with a content of 225 ml and a bottle deposit of HKD 1.00 . However, only a few of the products are filled into these bottles. More common forms of packaging are beverage cartons or 1.5 liter canisters.

In addition to milk, Kowloon Diary also produces ice cream in different variants and different flavors, for example a Chinese Nuomici ice cream product ( 雪糕 糯米糍 ), which has been successful since 1989 , comparable to Mochi ice cream products according to a product analysis by the Japanese Lotte Group.
