Hong Kong Post ( Chinese 香港 郵政 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Yóuzhèng , Jyutping Hoeng 1 Gong 2 Jau 4 Zing 3 ) is the state-owned postal company of Hong Kong . It is based in the General Post Office in the Central district .
history
The company goes back to the British Post Office in China , which opened the city's first post office in Central under the Royal Mail in 1841 and operated under its name until 1860. Subsequently, the name was changed to Hong Kong Post and the first Hong Kong postage stamps appeared in 1862. These showed the portrait of Victoria and were to be used from 1864 onwards. For around 100 years, images of the respective monarchs were common on postage stamps, and other motifs were only introduced from the 1960s. Airmail was offered from 1936 ; up to now, shipments to England were carried on the Trans-Siberian Railway . In 1877 Hong Kong became a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), where it is now called Hong Kong, China is part of the Chinese delegation . The company is also a member of the Asian-Pacific Postal Union (APPU) and the Asia Pacific Post Cooperative . In 1980 a mail center for international processing was opened in Hung Hom , followed in 1998 at the new Hong Kong Airport . In 1989 a mail sorting system was installed in the main post office. In 2014, the Central Mail Center opened in Kowloon Bay , replacing Hung Hom's mail center and the sorting system from the main post office. There are also plans to move the General Post Office to Kowloon Bay.

In addition to the usual delivery of letters and parcels, Hong Kong Post also offers a courier service under the name SpeedPost Express Mail Service . In the 2018/19 financial year, 907 million local letters, 286 million abroad and 790,000 parcels were sent.
