Hong Kong Museum of History
The Hong Kong Museum of History ( Chinese 香港 歷史博物館 / 香港 历史博物馆 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Lìshǐ Bówùguǎn , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 Lik 6 si 2 Bok 3 mat 6 gun 2 - "Hong Kong History Museum") is a history museum that especially focuses on the history of the city of Hong Kong . The museum is located in the Tsim Sha Tsui neighborhood on the Kowloon Peninsula and is operated by the Hong Kong Government's Leisure and Cultural Services Department .

In 1962 the City Museum and Art Gallery opened in Hong Kong City Hall in Central on Hong Kong Island . In July 1975, the museum was split into two separate museums, the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Museum of Art . The Hong Kong Museum of History moved to a new building in 1998 in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Kowloon in the Yau Tsim Mong district . The building cost 390 million Hong Kong dollars and was designed by P&T Architects and Engineers based on the architectural concept by E. Verner Johnson. Together with the Hong Kong Science Museum ( 香港 科學館 / 香港 科学馆 ) in the immediate vicinity, it forms a joint museum complex.

The exhibitions include the permanent exhibition on the history of the city and a temporary special exhibition with regularly changing topics. It is possible to access other virtual exhibitions via the museum's website .
The permanent exhibition comprises 8 galleries with over 4000 exhibits, 750 graphics, several dioramas and multimedia offers, on two levels with an area of 7000 m². The exhibition vividly explores Hong Kong's natural history, archeology, ethnography and local history. The time span of the historical representation covers the Devonian , the fourth geochronological period within the Paleozoic about 400 million years ago up to the reunification of Hong Kong with the People's Republic of China in 1997.
