history

The first considerations to build a planetarium or a space museum in Hong Kong were made by the city committee in the early 1960s. The decision to build the Space Museum at its current location was made in 1973 and construction work began in 1977. The official opening was on October 7, 1980, to the public on October 8, 1980. The first modernization of the museum and the exhibition rooms began in 1988, and in 1991 it was reopened. An overhaul of the museum was last planned for 2018.

The museum has two wings. In one, under an egg-shaped dome with a diameter of 23 m, is the planetarium - the Stanley Ho Space Theater - and the Hall of Space Science ( Hall of Space Science ). The other wing houses the Hall of Astronomy (Hall of Astronomy) and an auditorium. In the planetarium, among other things, introductions to the night sky and special programs take place twice a year; There is an Omnimax film projector in the hall . The two exhibition halls contain various exhibits, and various astronomy competitions, lectures, film screenings, etc. are organized here.

In November 2008, the Space Museum opened an external observatory ( Hong Kong Space Museum Sai Kung iObservatory ) in a three-story building in Sai Kung Country Park ( Sai Kung Peninsula , New Territories ) with a 6 m diameter dome. A Cassegrain telescope with a 60 cm mirror works there.

The museum has also been operating an astropark in the New Territories (in the Chong Hing Water Sports Center ) since January 30, 2010.

The Space Museum's first curator was Joseph Liu, after whom the asteroid (6743) Liu was named in 1994 . The museum made some efforts to improve accessibility.
