In January 2013 it was decided to subject the whole area to a thorough renovation. In the planning proposal of the “Harbourfront Commission” and “LCSD” it was planned to first overhaul the gardens in the western part at short notice and then to expand them by creating the “Art Square” in this area (phase I). The plan was to completely redesign the planting in the eastern part (phase II). The plans have been aligned with the plans for the renovation of other parts of the HKCCC, particularly the Museum of Art . The reopening of the new garden took place on December 8, 2017. For this reopening at the end of 2017, the event called "Circular Reflection" was planned from December 9, 2017 to February 11, 2018. These involved various participatory and virtual reality installations and experimental performances, in which the directorate of the Museum of Art also participated.

Art Square at Salisbury Garden

The Art Square at Salisbury Garden, often just called "Art Square" for short, was proposed as an open-air addition to Salisbury Garden according to drafts by the LCSD and the Harbourfront Commission (Phase I of the renewal plan for Salisbury Garden) and opened to the public on February 22, 2014 made. Since then, the space has been used for open-air exhibitions of sculptures, especially by local artists. The changing exhibitions are proposed, installed and supervised by the Museum of Art . Other cultural programs also take place.

In the past, the following exhibitions were held in Art Square:

  • February 22, 2014 - August 3, 2014 - The exhibition, which was dedicated to the topic "Heaven, Earth and Man - A Hong Kong Art Exhibition", took place at the opening of Art Square on February 22, 2014 and was the first outdoor Exhibition on this square. Large sculptures by three of the city's well-known artists were designed to encourage visitors to "appreciate the various elements of nature, explore human interaction and enjoy the artistic atmosphere." The exhibition ran until August 30, 2014.
  • November 28, 2015 - May 29, 2016 - "Wall-less Chit-ChaNt", in German roughly "wallless chat (chants)", with two large-format works of art in the center, which should encourage informal conversations and interactive interaction. In addition to a chair installation by Freeman Lau , the installation by concept artist Zheng Bo with the title “Sing for her” met with great interest. Through music, the different ethnic minorities of the city should learn more about each other and find each other and understand each other.
  • December 8, 2017 - November 2018 - “Growing City · Growing Home” is the title of the exhibition, which deals with the past, present and future of Hong Kong and critically reflects the city's rapidly changing appearance.
