Bornholmsgat is a strait in the Baltic Sea . It separates the Swedish province of Skåne län from the Danish island of Bornholm .

geography

In the north of Bornholmsgat lies the coast of Sandhammaren with Sweden's most southeastern headland. In the south, the strait is bordered by the rocky coast around Hammershus . Between these places the strait is 19.2  nautical miles wide and over 40 m deep in the middle . For terrestrial navigation , Bornholmsgat is designated with the lighthouses Sandhammarens fyr and Hammerodde Fyr .

traffic

Bornholmsgat is the main shipping route between the western and eastern Baltic Sea. For this reason, the traffic separation area of the same name has been set up there, which is also the eastern end of the deep-water route to the North Sea .

Between the ports of Ronne on Bornholm and Ystad in Sweden RoRo ferries commute the Bornholmslinjen in regular service .

On May 31, 2003, the bulk carrier Fu Shan Hai sank in Bornholmsgat after colliding with the feeder ship Gdynia .
