Sandhammaren is a Swedish stretch of coast on the Baltic Sea . It represents the southeasternmost point of the Swedish coast.

location

The area to the east of Ystad , belonging to the Swedish municipality of Ystad , is characterized by its very fine, light-colored sand beaches and the resulting large sand dunes. The company is known as a nature reserve Sandhammaren under conservation .

history

The sea off Sandhammaren is Sweden's largest ship graveyard due to dangerous sandbanks and strong currents . With thousands of wrecks, it has the highest density of wrecks in the country. A plaque attached below the Sandhammarens fyr lists the ships that crashed between 1852 and 1951. The first Swedish rescue station was built here in the middle of the 19th century. It was in operation until it moved to Kåseberga in 1945 and is now open as a museum. The Sandhammaren lighthouse, which still exists today, was built in 1861.

The area of Sandhammaren was considered an area in which beach robbers were active who lured ships onto the sandbanks using false light signals. The Swedish King Charles XI. therefore had a well-known oak forest located here cut down in the 17th century in order to take the beach robbers away from them.

As early as the 16th century, this original forest had declined significantly due to logging and grazing. In the 18th century the landscape was largely free of trees. This led to strong sand drifts inland and on the farmers' fields, which destroyed harvests. Pines were therefore planted , which still characterize the landscape behind the dunes today. In the nature reserve, however, there are still some sparse stands of small, gnarled, often multi-stemmed oaks that are remnants of the original oak forest.

nature

Due to the prevailing flow conditions, Sandhammaren constantly receives new fine sand, which comes from beaches that are declining elsewhere. The dunes, which are constantly reshaped by the wind, are habitat for common beach grass and common beach rye . The sand areas, protected from the wind by new sand dunes, are populated by mosses and lichens. Here the tall grasses are replaced by sand sedge , crowberry and heather . Shrubs and trees can be found even further inland. The rare brown oak hairstreak occurs in the nature reserve .
