history

Due to strong currents and dangerous sandbanks, the part of the Baltic Sea off Sandhammaren is particularly dangerous and with thousands of wrecks it is also the largest ship cemetery in the country.

A makeshift beacon made of coal was in operation from July 1831 to April 1832. In 1859, the Swedish Reichstag approved the funds for the construction of the lighthouse near Sandhammaren. In 1861, construction began on today's lighthouse, which was inaugurated on October 10, 1862. In addition, another identical lighthouse was built by 1863. This created a twin signal, which should prevent confusion with other lighthouses in the lake area, those of Bornholm and Christiansö .

Because the subsoil was very sandy because of the large sand dunes at the site, the construction of lighthouses in massive construction was out of the question. The designer Nils Gustaf von Heidenstam therefore created two lattice towers from standardized metal struts. In the middle there is a stair pipe with a spiral staircase . Towers of this type of construction were then also used at other locations. The lighthouse fire was operated using beet oil lamps . From 1887 a kerosene lamp was used.

After the lens in the southern tower had been exchanged for a rotating 1400 mm belt lens in 1891 , the twin signal could be dispensed with, as each tower could now be assigned its own identifier. In 1891 the northernmost of the two lighthouses was therefore stopped. This tower was dismantled in 1904 and rebuilt in Pite-Rönnskär in northern Sweden in 1905 .

After the lighthouse received a signal cannon and a fog horn in 1895 , the kerosene lamp was replaced by a gas lamp in 1902. Beacons and fog horns have been operated electrically since 1942. In 1950 an emergency generator was installed . Starting in 1971, the operation of the lighthouse was automated in several steps. In 1979 the last lighthouse keeper left the tower. Today the tower, which has been under monument protection as Byggnadsminne since 1978 , is remote-controlled from Norrköping . It bears the international number C2460 , the ARLHS number SWE-055 and the Swedish number 654600 .
