The Hong Kong Cultural Center Complex , or HKCCC for short , is an ensemble of museums and other cultural institutions in the former Tsim Sha Tsui district in the south of Kowloon , Hong Kong . It is a kind of waterfront and is located at the southern beginning of Nathan Road between Salisbury Road and the shore of Victoria Harbor . The ensemble is located near the well-known Peninsula Hotel and Chungking Mansions at the beginning of Nathan Road on a waterfront between Salisbury Road and Victoria Harbor.

Hong Kong Cultural Center Complex

The various building complexes include the Hong Kong Space Museum (opened in 1980), the Hong Kong Cultural Center (1989), the Hong Kong Museum of Art (1991) and the Salisbury Garden (1997), which was expanded to include Art Square in 2014 . It is operated and administered by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), a division of the Hong Kong government . Right next to the Museum of Art , another Kowloon attraction can be visited, the Avenue of Stars (opened in 2004), an attraction for fans of Hong Kong films .

After more than twenty years of existence of the cultural complex, the operator decided to renovate and expand the LCSD. In January 2013 a paper with planning proposals was presented, which contained short-term and long-term measures:

  • The short-term plan, which was to be carried out in two phases, included, in addition to redesigning the gardens, above all the construction of the Art Square by 2014 with opportunities for open-air exhibitions, which since then have shown sculptures by local artists in particular.
  • The long-term plan included an overhaul of the Hong Kong Museum of Art (2015 to 2019), the overhaul of the Hong Kong Space Museum (2018) and the overhaul of the Hong Kong Cultural Center.

Hong Kong Space Museum

Hong Kong Space Museum (Chinese 香港 太空 館 ) is an astronomy and space science museum located in the south of Kowloon; it consists of a planetarium and two exhibits: Hall of Space Science and Hall of Astronomy . It had been planned since 1961, but did not open until October 8, 1980.

Hong Kong Cultural Center

Hong Kong Cultural Center (Chinese 香港 文化 中心 ) is a culture and concert hall in the Kowloon cultural complex, consisting of a concert hall with over 2000 seats, a theater for operas as well as dance, theater and ballet performances for over 1700 spectators, a studio theater and one Exhibition gallery. The building was opened on November 8, 1989.

Hong Kong Museum of Art

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (Chinese 香港 藝術館 ) is the most important art museum in Hong Kong. The museum aims to preserve China's cultural heritage and promote Hong Kong's art. The museum has a remarkable collection of more than 16,000 art objects. The museum closed in 2015 for a major, multi-year renovation. It is planned to reopen in 2019.

Salisbury Garden and Art Square

Salisbury Garden is a public garden and art complex on the shores of Victoria Harbor, opened in 1997; In 2014 it was expanded to include Art Square (full name: Art Square at Salisbury Garden), which serves as an art space for art events, music performances and other cultural activities as an exhibition space for local artists. Salisbury Garden was also redesigned for the opening of Art Square. The first exhibition was "Heaven, Earth and Man - A Hong Kong Art Exhibition".
