The Hong Kong Polytechnic University , or PolyU for short ( Chinese  香港 理工 大學 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Lǐgōng Dàxué , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 Lei 5 gung 1 Daai 6 hok 6 , English The Hong Kong Polytechnic University , short 理 大 , Lǐdà , Jyutping Lei 5 daai 6 ) is the largest state-funded university in Hong Kong .

history

The university's history began in 1937 as the Government Trade School on Wood Road in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island . The vocational school offered technical courses and was the first state-funded tertiary education facility in Hong Kong. In 1947 the company was renamed Hong Kong Technical College and in 1957 the current location was opened in Hung Hom , a district on the peninsula in the east of Kowloon . In 1969 the conversion to a polytechnic began and most of the vocational training courses were transferred to the newly established Morrison Hill Technical Institute (now the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education ). In 1972 the conversion was completed and the facility with its current name was opened. In 1994, the PolyU was recognized by the Hong Kong government as a fully-fledged university and changed its name to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University .

In November 2019, the university was occupied by students, schoolchildren and masked protesters of unknown origin as part of the protests in Hong Kong . Police surrounded the university and used tear gas and plastic bullets. The students threw Molotov cocktails and fired at the police with slingshots and arrows and bow . Protest participants and squatters as well as police officers were injured. In the violent clash, an arrow from the protesters shot through the lower legs of a police officer. The occupation lasted more than a week.

structure

The PolyU has a total of 27,088 students, about half of which are financed by state funds. Of these, 20,722 are full-time students and 6,366 part-time students. There are 5,429 employees, 1,352 of them in academia, 1,409 in research and 2,668 in administration. (As of 2017/18) The organizational structure is divided into eight faculties and two of them as so-called schools :
