Consolidation is the American type designation for freight train - steam locomotives the wheel arrangement 1'D or 2-8-0, so with a leading end, side shiftable generally radially adjustable wheelset and four driving axles .

The name Consolidation goes back to a locomotive with this wheel arrangement ordered in 1866 by the Lehigh and Mahanoy Railroad , a mainly coal-hauling railway company. Their name then became the standard designation for locomotives of this type.

From 1866 to the First World War, the 1'D wheel arrangement was considered ideal for heavy freight trains in the USA.
