The Interlaken West railway station is named after the Interlaken Ost train station , the smaller of the two railway stations in the Bernese municipality Interlaken . It is located on the Thunerseebahn and, in addition to regional trains, is also served by all long-distance trains that go to Interlaken Ost, including Intercity and ICE trains. The station is owned by BLS , but is also served by SBB trains.

history

The station was opened on August 12, 1872 as Interlaken as part of the first stage of the Bödelibahn . Almost two years later it was continued via Interlaken Zollhaus (now Interlaken Ost ) to Bönigen . The main reason for this railway construction was the distance to be bridged between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in Interlaken.

In 1893 the Thunerseebahn leased the Bödelibahn as part of its opening from Thun to Interlaken Ost and took it over completely in 1900.

With the opening of the Bernese Oberland Railway , Interlaken Zollhaus became more important than Interlaken, so the two stations were renamed: Interlaken in Interlaken West, Interlaken Zollhaus in Interlaken Ost. Although Interlaken Ost had another addition with the Brünigbahn , the SBB long-distance trains in the direction of Bern still stop in Interlaken West. This makes Interlaken, with just under 5500 inhabitants, the smallest Swiss municipality with two train stations regularly served by long-distance traffic. The other municipalities with several long-distance train stations are Basel ( SBB and Bad Bf ), Zurich ( HB , Oerlikon , Altstetten ) and Grenchen (north and south ).

At times the station had three tracks, but today there are only two. Park & Ride parking spaces were created in place of the third track. In 2007, following the opening of the base tunnel on the Lötschberg, the two-hour InterCity direct connections to Zurich HB were discontinued due to new timetable routes ; they are instead led to Basel.

From 1914 to 1939, the terminus of the Steffisburg – Thun – Interlaken tram was at Interlaken West station .

Train connections

Interlaken West is connected to the Thun - Interlaken Ost train route for regional traffic, and to the IC Interlaken Ost - Basel SBB for long-distance traffic , with ICE running four times a day in each direction to Berlin Ostbahnhof . There is a direct TGV connection from Paris once a day . The InterCity trains run at least every hour, every other hour every half hour. The regional trains do not run according to an hourly timetable, but two two-hour intervals are run, which are regular in themselves and differ from the other by 7 to 8 minutes.
