The engelhorn GmbH & Co. KGaA , formerly Engelhorn & Sturm , is a business for men and boys' clothing founded in 1890 by Adam Sturm (master tailor) and Georg Engelhorn (merchant) in Mannheim . The company is a medium-sized company in Mannheim.
history
On 3. January 1890 Georg Engelhorn and Adam Sturm opened their first retail store with menswear and boys in the Mannheimer Planken located square O 5 . In 1902, Engelhorn and Sturm bought the entire property O 5 due to lack of space, on which the company's main building still stands today. A special feature at the time were the oversized shop windows, which were illuminated with electric charcoal lamps. In 1904, the co-founder Adam Sturm died without an heir.
After the First World War , the sons Rudolf and Georg jun. Engelhorn into the business. In 1921 a sports department and shortly thereafter a lingerie department were added. A few years later, in 1939, the women's clothing department was opened. During the Second World War , the house was completely destroyed. The sale continued until the basement was rebuilt. In 1950 Engelhorn & Sturm held a sales sale for the first time , which attracted immense customer interest.
In 1968 the third generation joined the company: Georg jun. Engelhorn's sons Richard (* 1938–2019) and Hans (* 1935; retired from management in 2000) and Rudolf Engelhorn's son Peter (1936–2005) became managing directors.
In the 1980s, the sports house (1981) was built in the direct vicinity of the main house in O 6 square and the stocking house, called Centipede (1984), and the laundry house (1988) on the other side in O 4 square . In 1987 Engelhorn & Sturm inaugurated the city garden in the neighboring square N 5 , a 5000 m² adventure department store with 40 branded shops, more than half of which Engelhorn & Sturm used themselves. The concept was abandoned in 1995 and the sports store moved into the redesigned building of the former city garden . The so-called trend house for youthful jeans and leisure fashion was housed in the vacated rooms in O 6 . In the 1990s, shops-in-shops were integrated into the main building, such as a Polo Ralph Lauren and a Bogner boutique (later Jil Sander , Hugo Boss , Ermenegildo Zegna , Burberry , Strenesse etc.). A children's department was created in the basement. In 1998 the sports store was increased by seven floors. During this time the company name was shortened to Engelhorn . In 2001 Engelhorn inaugurated the logistics center in the Neckarau district . In 2002 the first sports store branch outside Mannheim opened in Viernheim .
In 2003, the fourth generation joined the company with Fabian Engelhorn (* 1975; son of Richard Engelhorn) and Andreas Hilgenstock (* 1961; grandson of Rudolf Engelhorn). In the years that followed, the sports store was redesigned and expanded to 9500 m² (2005). At the end of 2006 the fish restaurant le Corange (made up of French 'cor' (horn) and 'ange' (angel) for 'horn-angel') was opened on the 5th and 6th floors of the main building. In 2006 engelhorn also gave the go-ahead for its own online shop. In 2012 engelhorn opened a branch at Frankfurt am Main Airport . Since 2012, Simon Engelhorn (* 1984; son of Hans Engelhorn) has been part of the fourth generation of entrepreneurs.
In 2013/2014 engelhorn added two floors to the main building. In addition, the gourmet restaurant OPUS V opened in the main building in 2013 under the leadership of chef Tristan Brandt and in 2014 the roof garden restaurant . In 2014 the OPUS V was awarded one star in the Michelin Guide . In 2015 engelhorn celebrated its 125th anniversary with a photo art campaign. In winter 2016, the OPUS V restaurant was awarded the second Michelin Guide star. In addition to numerous other awards, Tristan Brandt was also named the climber of the year in Baden-Württemberg with 18 out of 20 possible Gault & Millau points and is thus one of the 20 best chefs in Germany. In November 2017, the Michelin Guide confirmed the two stars of the OPUS V restaurant. At the same time, the le Corange restaurant under chef Dominik Markowitz received its first star.
The vinotheque coq au vin , located between the stocking house and the laundry house in O4, has been part of the engelhorn group since November 12, 2016 . The coq au vin offers its customers high-quality wines from winemakers and young winemakers in the Palatinate. The concept combines these wines with "wine-related" dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.
At the beginning of March 2017, Engelhorn opened the engelhorn e-Mobility Center on the ground floor of the main building in cooperation with the electric car manufacturer Tesla . In addition to three different Tesla models, around 20 e-bikes from various manufacturers will be presented in this future area . Also in March, the engelhorn trendhouse reopened under the name engelhorn the box after renovation.
