Visual aid

A visual aid is an optical or optoelectronic device used to improve vision or to rehabilitate visual disorders . These include, among other things, glasses , as well as contact lenses , magnifying glasses or loupes .

In the case of defects of the eye, such as B. macular degeneration , retinal changes , optic nerve atrophy , clouding of the lens , the cornea or the vitreous , pigmentation disorders , color blindness and nystagmus (nystagmus), the treatment under the rehabilitation of suitable primarily by adjusting corrective lenses ( spectacles , contact lenses , edge glass filters ). Monocular , hand magnifiers , loupes , video magnifiers , Motion Apps , magnifiers are further aids ( magnifying visual aids) that come within the scope of the therapy used.

When detected refractive errors necessarily suitable corrective lenses are to be used while driving, when the visual acuity without correction (rough visus) falls below a certain value. A corresponding note is made in the driver's license . Such a note can be both a condition and a restriction of the driving license . Depending on the circumstances, it can constitute an administrative offense or a criminal offense if, contrary to the entry, no visual aids are worn.

Due to the increasing importance of EDP applications, visual aids are also in demand in the computer sector. The only computer-aided applications in this area are image detail-enlarging applications ( screen magnifier ) and electronic reading aids ( screen reader ), some of which can already be found in today's standard software.

Other visual aids include night vision devices , binoculars , reading stones , lorgnons or monocles .
