life and work

Corona was born the son of traveling merchants in Trentino . However, he has lived in Erto parish since early childhood , where his family has been based for generations. In his poverty-stricken youth in the Friulian Dolomites , Corona worked as a forest and mine worker. Besides mountaineering, wood carving has been one of his passions since childhood. In the 1970s, the sculptor Augusto Murer (1922–1985) discovered the autodidact and from then on supported him in developing this talent. His first exhibition took place in Longarone in 1975 .

He is one of the most famous wood sculptors in Italy.

As a mountaineer, he explored numerous routes in the Dolomites in the area of the Piave .

Corona's first climbs took place at the Campanile di Val Montanaia.

Corona became known to a broad audience in Italy primarily as a writer. After a few short stories by him were published for the first time in 1997 in the regional daily newspaper Il Gazzettino , he increasingly turned to this activity. Reviews

The literary scholar Claudio Magris says about Mauro Corona:

“Scrittore scarno e asciutto, e insieme magico nell'essenzialità con cui narra storie fiabesche e insieme di brusca, elementare realtà. I suoi racconti hanno l'autorità della favola, in cui il meraviglioso si impone con assoluta semplicità, con l'evidenza del quotidiano. In loro c'è comunione con la natura, col fluire nascosto e incessante della vita, e un'infinita, intrepida solitudine. "

“A sober and dry writer and at the same time magical in the way with which he tells his fairytale-like stories of at the same time bitter, elementary reality. His stories have the power of fairy tales, in which the miraculous imposes itself with complete self-evident and obvious everydayness. In them there is communion with nature, with the hidden and restless flow of life and an infinite, fearless solitude. "

- Claudio Magris, foreword to Il volo della martora (Italian Or. 1997)

"In the valley of the Vajont"

The book is about Severino Corona, or Zino for short, at the end of the 19th century, who grew up as an orphan boy in the Friuli mountains. He later opens a cheese dairy with Raggio, whose wife tries to seduce him. Zino poisons his friend, who doesn't die of belladonna, but goes mad.

“The stories ... in his novel 'Im Tal des Vajont' ... are exciting and touching. In their terrible drift, the figures of the mountains of Erto awaken compassion. "

"The track of the marten"

The book is about Corona's childhood before the disaster of Vajont , which also largely destroyed his hometown. He remembers the near-natural everyday occurrences, such as a marten who led a whole hunting party by the nose, but without glossing over, as Claudio Magris says in the foreword. At the end of the book, the village society changes through the money that comes with the construction of the dam or the state compensation after the disaster.
