The Grotta Gigante ( Briška jama in Slovenian ), also known as the Giant Cave of Trieste , is located near the village of Sgonico, around 15 km from Trieste .
History of exploration
In 1840 Frederico Lindner came across the cave while searching for the underground course of the Timavo . Further research followed by Giovanni Sigon and engineers from the Austro-Hungarian Southern Railway . However, this research did not bring any new knowledge. From 1890 the research of the "Club Turisti Triestini" was resumed and in 1897 Andreas Perko was able to draw up a complete plan. On July 5, 1908, the management began, at that time with candles and Bengali lighting . However, tourism did not kick in until after 1957, after electrical lighting was installed.
The total length is 380 m, the total depth 160 m. The hall is 98.50 m high, 76.30 m wide and 167.60 m long. Since 1995, the Grotta Gigante has been in the Guinness Book of Records as the “largest show cave in the world”.
In the cave there are two geodetic pendulums with a length of around 100 m for researching the earth's tides . Next to the cave there is a speleology museum with numerous speleological , geological and paleontological exhibits.
