Sežana ( Italian Sesana , German Zizan ) is a town in Slovenia near the Italian border near Trieste . The nearby Sežana border crossing is named after her, and the village lies on the Spielfeld-Straß-Trieste railway line . The municipality is particularly known for its Lipica Stud . The village has 4,866 inhabitants (as of 2005).
Attractions
The most famous attraction is the Lipica stud farm , located in the Lipica district ( Italian : Lipizza ), where the origin of the Lipizzaner breed was laid. The stud was founded in 1580 by Archduke Karl , Maximilian II's brother . From here the breeding extended to the neighboring countries.
The construction of the stud was very tough, as there were no areas suitable for horses in the Karst Mountains. So initially the cultivation of oats and pastures failed, which made it necessary to transport forage for a long time. There was also no water in the stud area, so the rain had to be caught in cisterns . Since this was not enough either, drinking towels were laid out to absorb the morning dew . Despite these obstacles, the Lipizzaner breeding was a great success and after a short time the stud was able to pass on excess foals to other studs.
Today the stud consists of 400 horses.
