The Lipica Stud is a stud in the Lipica district (Italian: Lipizza ) in the Sežana municipality in Slovenia , not far from the Italian border. The district is the namesake for the white Lipizzaner horses. Lipica is one of the most popular destinations for excursions in the Karst region.

history

The history of the stud is closely linked to that of the Lipizzaner and goes back to the 16th century. The stud was founded by Archduke Karl around 1580 , because the Habsburg nobility repeatedly wanted horses for parade appearances. The breeding of the snow-white Lipizzaners was already very successful in the beginning. It was a cross between Andalusian stallions and local mares. Their erudition and robustness first brought the horses to Vienna for dressage purposes, later they were mainly demonstrated in the Spanish Riding School at the imperial court.

With the outbreak of the First World War , the horses had to be evacuated and came via detours mainly to the Austrian Federal Stud Piber and the Italian State Stud in Monterotondo . The stud in Lipizza was only able to recover from this loss after a long time and meanwhile has a successful breeding program of Lipizzans again.

sightseeing

Guided tours are offered in different languages at set times in the stud. A tour of the extensive grounds is possible by means of a carriage. There are also demonstrations of the classic Lipizzaner dressage riding school, which are accompanied by music and in which, among other things, capers are shown. Riding lessons and guided rides are also offered.
