Ankaran ( Italian Ancarano ) is a municipality in southwestern Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea . Ankaran used to be a district of Koper and on June 9, 2011 it split into an independent municipality. The newly elected mayor and the municipal council started their work on January 1st, 2015. The official languages of the municipality are Slovenian and Italian .
geography
Ankaran is the smallest of the four Slovenian municipalities with sea access. The place is located on the south coast of the Muggia peninsula belonging to Istria (in Slovenia usually called Ankaran peninsula ), the northern part of which belongs to Italy with the city of Muggia (4 km away). In the municipality of Ankaran is the cape of the Muggia peninsula, the Debeli rtič (Italian Punta Grossa ), part of which has been designated as a natural monument since 1991. The industrial port of Koper begins about 2 km south of Ankaran, while the old town of Koper, further south, is 6 km away. Further neighboring towns are Lazzaretto-San Bartolomeo (district of Muggia, Italy) and Barizoni , Kolomban and Hrvatini (all districts of Koper), clockwise from north to east . The nearest big city is Trieste , the city center of which is 15 km northeast of Ankaran.
The municipality of Ankaran consists only of the district of the same name, in which 25 streets and 754 house numbers are recorded. The municipality includes the following places, settlements and places to live: Ankaran / Ancarano, Valdotra (west of Ankaran on the coast), Miloki / Milocchi (northwest of Ankaran inland, immediately north of Valdotra), Debeli Rtič / Punta Grossa (located on the cape of the same name), Kavarjola / Cavariola (between Ankaran and Miloki), Kolombini / Colombini, Rožnik / Roseto, Na Logu / Al Boschetto and Norbedi. The northern part of the industrial port of Koper is also located in the district of Ankaran, the river Rižana ( Risano in Italian ) forms the municipal boundary here.

Ankaran has 3216 inhabitants, of which 91.3% are Slovenes and 8.7% are foreigners (July 1, 2018). According to the 2002 census, 11.7% of Ankaran's residents were born abroad, while 20.4% were born in Ankaran, 43.8% in the Koper municipality and the remaining 24.1% in the rest of Slovenia. In 2015, 77.1% of the population were born in Slovenia and 22.9% abroad, of which 12.2% were born in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, 9.4% in countries of the European Union, 0 , 5% in other European countries and 0.7% outside of Europe.
