Location of Karyes

Karyes ( Greek Καρυές ( f. Pl. ) Also caries ) is the capital of the autonomous monastic state of Athos . The settlement has 163 inhabitants (2011) and is the seat of the administration, the parliament and the government of the monastic state as well as the representative of the Greek state . It is about 400 meters above sea level with a view of the Strymonian Gulf .

Organization of administration

Each of the 20 large monasteries sends two monks to Karyes. This circle forms the “parliament” of the clerical state. The delegates from 19 monasteries live in so-called Konak (embassies) of their monasteries. Only the members of the Koutloumousiou monastery live in their home monastery because of the local proximity. Four monks from four different monasteries form a government (Protat) in which all resolutions must be passed unanimously. The unanimity is documented by the fact that the official seal is divided into four and each of the four members of the government owns a quarter. Since resolutions are documented with a seal stamp, it is necessary that all members of the government add their partial seal.

Location, infrastructure and traffic

The place is centrally located on the Athos peninsula and is also the largest traffic junction. There are regular bus connections to Dafni , the main port, as well as more or less regular taxi bus connections to the monasteries, which are directly connected to Karyes by (gravel) road. Karyes consists of scattered two-story houses and in addition to the embassies and the government and administration building there is a bank, an OTE office , a police station, a first aid station and various shops for the spiritual (books, icons , sacred Items) and daily (groceries, tools, phone cards and the like) needs. A post office, a pharmacy and a restaurant complete the village character of this place.

Buildings

In Karyes there is also the Skite Agios Andrea with the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and the neighboring Athonitis school (college for Byzantine theology ) as well as the main church of Athos, in which the first constitution (written on the skin of a billy goat) is kept .
